When the family gained its citzenship, they changed their name from Swanson back to Rosberg. At the time they told Roy he could choose one of two middle names: Chester or Albin. He picked and used Chester, but when he later got 'hold of his birth certificate, it said Albin. Albin was his sister Olga's name for Roy in an interview when she was quite old.

BIOGRAPHY: The youngest child in his family, my grandpa, Roy Rosberg, was conceived in Sweden and born in Seattle shortly after his parents immigrated to the United States. The family moved to Ballard, a largely-Swedish community in the Seattle area. Grandpa worked most of his life at the Carnation Dairy in Seattle. When he was younger, he worked for the CCC. He wasn't drafted into WWII because of some minor physical defect -- flat feet or some such thing, which was a great relief to my grandmother. Grandpa had a rollicking sense of humor. When he wasn't telling jokes he was telling funny stories. A laugh a minute. He was always catching my gullible grandmother in some small practical joke. When my grandma made spaghetti for dinner he would say in a stern voice, "Shirley, how long did you *cook* this spaghetti?" She would sputter indignantly, and he'd hold his hands about eight inches apart and ask, "This long?" I remember him asking me once if I wanted to know how to make a jam sandwich. "Yes, grandpa," I said. He grinned. "You jam two pieces of bread together." He could find humor in any subject. When I was involved in a YMCA program in high school, my grandpa ribbed me about staying at the "Yim-ca Hotel." All through their married life my grandparents moved from house to house to house -- but always in the same Ballard neighborhood he'd grown up in. Grandma said Grandpa would watch the paper for real estate listings, and whenever he found a great deal on a house, they'd up and move again. She lost track of how many houses they'd lived in. He was also a shopper. After his retirement he made a hobby of comparison shopping, and he would spend every Wednesday "cherry picking" all the sales. When we were children we would beg to be allowed to go to the basement to look at grandpa's "store" of stuff he'd found on sale. When he died my grandmother announced that he'd stashed away enough paper goods that she'd never have to buy toilet paper again. --LauraMaery (Gold) Post

I've been told that he gave the earlier date in order to enter the service at a young age. Which may also account for the puzzling 1930 census report, taken while he was on active duty, that he was born in NY.

Introducing Wrzesnia
Wrzesnia is a town, situated on an intersection of main highways, 50 kilometers east of Poznan. The town was chartered in the 14th century (1357) but it had been mentioned as early as 1256. Wrzesnia is well-known as a site of two major historical events: The Battle of the village of Sokolowo, in which on the 2nd of May 1848 soldiers under the leadership of Ludwik Mieroslawski routed the Prussian army; and the School Strike of 1901 in which 118 children protested the teaching of religions classes in German. This event has gone down in history as the Children's Strike of Wrzesnia.

When Grandpa Gold was a young father, his wife Florence Annie died, leaving him alone to raise three small children. Thomas was working as a school custodian, which didn't allow him to earn sufficient money to care for his children. He missed his wife desperately, and became despondent over the idea of caring for small children with such an enormous handicap. One day, while he was at the school, he came to the conclusion that it would be best for everyone if he were simply to die. The school had a large boiler powered by a large fire. He contemplated killing himself by throwing himself in, but as he considered ending his life, he was visited by his wife, who called him a coward and told him to be a man and take care of his children. He knew then that he had to live and raise those children as well as he was able. When I lived in Missouri I went one day to visit my Stake President. My stake president saw my name, and asked whether I knew a man named Thomas Gold. I told him Thomas was my great-grandfather. The president's eyes misted over, and he said he was honored to meet me. Here's the story he told: "When I was a young man living near the Jordan River in Salt Lake City, Thomas Gold was my Sunday School teacher. We had several rowdy boys in our Sunday school class, but Brother Gold loved us anyway. He told us that he wanted us all to serve missions. If we did, he said, he'd pay our way. This was the middle of the Depression, when everybody was poor, and Brother Gold was poorer than most. He was a school janitor, and barely earned enough to keep himself alive. But when it came time for us to leave on our missions, he was good to his word. He found a way to pay the way for any boy who wanted to serve a mission. I didn't know for many years how much of a sacrifice he'd made for me to serve my mission. He was a very good man." My stake president told another funny story about Thomas Gold. To wit: "Thomas was a self-sufficient man and a hard worker. On day he decided to build a house on the Gold family property near the river. His brothers helped him dig a hole and make the plumbing connection, but Thomas said he'd put in his own foundation. Everybody teased him, because they knew he didn't have money or materials to build a foundation for his house. But he had a plan. He decided he'd build a foundation for free. From that day on, where ever he went he'd pick up broken bottles and tin cans, bring them home and throw them into the pit. Everybody teased him about his choice of building materials, but he just kept it up. Finally he had the pit filled with glass and metal, and then he started to frame a house. He actually built that little house on a foundation of broken glass and tin cans. He put in a floor, and walls and a ceiling, and when he was done, that's where he lived. The funny part is, that same little house was still standing last time I went to Salt Lake City. Maybe it'll stand forever." Thomas' faith was remarkable. Because of his faith and prayers, my grandfather, Stanley Albert Zielinski Sr. changed his life and became a devout Latter-day Saint -- while he was on maneuvers in the Army! Likewise, Thomas' daughter, my grandma, turned her own life around and became a stalwart Saint. One of the people Thomas taught as a Sunday School teacher later because a president of the Church -- Harold B. Lee. Tonight (Sunday, July 18, 2004), my mother told me a new story about Thomas. One Sunday my mother was reading the newspaper, when suddenly she was overcome with thoughts about Thomas Gold -- a man she'd never even met. She said it was weird; she just couldn't quit thinking about him. While she was lost in a stupor of thought, the phone rang. It was my grandmother calling to say her dad had just died. This is a particularly poignant story for a couple of reasons. Not only is it the first time I've ever heard my mother relate any kind of spiritual experience whatsoever; it also amplifies the story my grandmother told me about Thomas' death. On that Sunday morning, January 3, 1960, Thomas had gone in to his Bishop and paid his tithing. He said to the Bishop that his tithing was now paid in full, and that he was clear with the Lord. I find it fascinating that so often people choose the moment of their own death, because within a couple of hours of his accounting, Thomas had died. He was back in the presence of the Lord and in the arms of his beloved wife.

Thomas was an invalid, and family pictures show him with a severely twisted foot and leg. He walked with a crutch all his life, and as a young man he was unable to serve a much-desired mission because there were no resources to accommodate his deformities. (This was a time long before laws required businesses and town planners to accommodate the needs of the handicapped.)4Comments from LauraMaery Post (paf@writerspost.com).
In fact, Thomas was married twice, first to Florence Annie Robinson, the mother of his three children, and after her death, to Helene Martha Hiedel, with whom he raised a foster child, Richard.
An errant AF submission lists Thomas' sister Elmina as his wife. This submission is wrong and should not be perpetuated.
