Benjamin and Hannah Sikes were some of the original settlers of Ludlow, MA.
Ludlow records show that in 1776 at a town meeting three men were chosen to meet with Benjamin to acquire some land, "where we bury our dead." The clerk's minutes recorded for the town meeting of 31 Mar 1777 says:
Received a deed of a Gift from Mr. Benjamin Sikes of a Certain piece of land in order to or as a place to bury our Dead - voted also that the Thanks of the town be Returned for the same to the said Mr. Sikes for his Benevolence. The Sikes Cemetery named for Benjamin is the oldest cemetery in Ludlow. When Benjamin gave the land it was already a burial place for two Sikes family members. The first grave is Anna (wife of Lieutenant John Sikes) his daughter-in-law. The second grave is Submit, daughter of Reuben and Mary Chapin.
The gravestone of Benjamin, who died on 2 Aug 1781, aged 77 years, reads "Death is a debt / To nature due, / Which I have paid / and so must you".
