Deacon Samuel Chapin, probably of Welsh origin, took the freeman's oath in Boston in 1641. He was a deacon of the Church. He probably resided in Dorchester before moving in 1642 to Springfield, Mass., wherehe was a magistrate and an active public man. Josiah Chapin, one of his sons, settled in Mendon, Worcester, Mass., as one of the original grantees of the town.

Samuel Chapin was baptized in the Parish Church of Saint John Baptist in Paignton, Devonshire, 8 Oct. 1598. He married Cicely Penny, daughter of Henry and Jane Penny, 9 Feb. 1623. She was baptized in the Church of St. John Bptist 21 Feb. 1601. He and his family emigrated to Roxbury, MA before Apr. 1641. His son, Japhet, was baptized in Roxbury 15 Dec. 1642 and the family probably left for Springfield soon after that date. On 26 Jan 1642/43 Samuel Chapin and five others were appointed "to lay out the lands. . . soefar as shall amount to an hundred & fifty acres." Samuel Chapin was one of the leaders in town affairs at Springfield. He was also a leader in the affairs of the Church. When their minister left to go back to England four men took over "the lords worke on the saboth", they were deacon wright, deacon chapin, Mr. Hollyocke, and Henry Burt. Deacon Samuel Chapin died 11 Nov. 1675. His wife died 8 Feb 1682.

BIOGRAPHY: Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers to New England by James A. Savage

Samuel Chapin was first in Roxbury 1638. He brought his wife and seven children, had one at Roxbury and one at Springfield. Freeman 2 Jun 1641, was a proprietor of Westfield 1660, a deacon and man of distinction. He died 11 Nov 1675.

Deacon Samuel Chapin came with his family to reside in Springfield in
1642. It would rather appeaar that he resided in this country
considerable time, perhaps eight or ten yearss before he came to
Springfield, and perhaps the greater part of his children were born in
this country, but no record has been found of the birth of but one--the
youngest, and we do not find any6 record of but one of his sons taking
the freeman's oath. David, his son, was made a freeman in Springfield,
5th day a12d month, 1649. He is supposed to be the progenitor of all who
bear the name in this country, and I have not found one of the name who
could trace their lineage to any other source. In 1652, October 10,
Samuel Chapin was appointed one of the magistrates of Springfield and in
1654 his commission was extended indefinitely. He was also much employed
in other public business--useful and highly esteemed man. In the records
of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay in Enew England" the name john Chapin
is mentioned in connection with the building of a movable fort, March 4,
1633-4,and in July 1634, Mention is made of a meadow a part of which
"John Chapin hath mown".

Next to the Public Library in Springfieldthere is a bronze statue, "The Pur itan", placed there 24 Nov 1887 whichhonors him. Page X11 of Chapin Book: Deacon Samuel Chapin's Place in the Community:
Samuel Chapin came to New Englan probably with his father and family in1635 or earlier. A r ecord at Roxbury, of early but unknown dates showsthat he possessed 24 acres of land there , and had eight persons in hisfamily, himself, wife, father, and five children. (The presen ce of hisfather John Chapin, at this time is in conformity with records alreadyquoted). I n 1641 he bought a house and lot of James Howe and became aFreeman, which implied he was a c hurch member and gave him the right tovote and hold office under the Colonial Government.
He was evidently an acquaintance of William Pynchon in England and aneighbor, for a short ti me, in Roxbury. Pynchon, in 1636, led about adozen families westward to the Connecticut Riv er, where he founded thesettlement first known as Agawam, later named Springfield. The Chap insapparently migrated to the new settlement during the winter of 1642-3.This change was d oubtless largely due to Pynchon's influence.
William Pynchon apponted five men of standing in Springfield, calledSelectman, to warch ove r morals, health, and public measures. DeaconSamuel was one of these. One of their most de licate duties was that ofassigning the seats in the meeting house. The place of Mrs. Cissil y C.is there recorded: "Goodwife Chapin is to sitt in the Seate alonge withMrs. Glover an d Mrs. Hollyock." Mrs. Grover was the minister's wife andwas therefore the leading lady, an d Mrs. Hollyock was the daughter ofWilliam Pynchon.
Samuel was engaged in town business and held continuously office ofselectman 1644 to 1652 an d again in 1661 and 1664, and later as auditor. He was first called deacon in the records o n Feb. 21 1650. Besides theregular duties assigned to this office, he conducted the Sabbat hservice, including preaching, for several years when the church lacked apastor.
In 1651, William Pynchon was convicted of heresy, by the General Court, and returned to Engla nd. His son-in-law, Henry Smith then became chiefmagistrate. The next year he too returne d to England and Capt. JohnPynchon, Lieut. Elizer Holyoke and Samuel Chapin were by the Gene ralCourt commissioned magistrates for the administration of justice,"allowing them the powe r of a County Court." He held the office until1664, and in addition performed important dut ies, laying out land grantsand the plantations that became Northampton and Hadley.
His first home lot was at the corner of the present Main and PynchonStreets, but by 1664 h e appears to have been living in Chicopee, withhis son Japhet. His holding in Springfield w ere large, but he gave allto his sons in his life time, reserving a life interest for himsel f andhis wife, his will disposing of personal estate only.
In October, 1675, Springfield was attacked by Indians and burned. DeaconChapin did not se e the town rebuilt, for in about a month, as he wrotehis son Japhet, "My father was taken ou t of this troublesome world the11 day of November about eleven of the clock in the eve, 1675 ."
Deacon Samuel Chapin "conscientiously and wisely discharged importanttrusts for the maintena nce of religion and good order and left anabiding impress of his character and life on the c ity." To judge fromthe private acts of the amn, and from the firm hand he wrote, he was a man of some education, strong will, inflexible integrity, abundant charityand real piety.

In 1877 a bronze statue of "The Puritan" by the famous sculptor Saint Gaudens was presented to the city of Springfield and placed beside the public libary on State Street. It was dedicated in memory of deacon Samuel Chapin, although it is, of course, only an idealized portrait..."
