He possessed 2 oxen, 1 cow,and 1 horse. Unfortunately, the marital status and number of childrenare not given. Paul Hazeltine/Hazelton's wife, Mary Rice was a daughterof Beriah Rice who is known to have moved to Annapolis, Annapolis, NS in1760. In his supplement to Calnek's History of the County of Annapolis,Judge Savary provides a copy of the list of grantors of the township ofAnnapolis, dated 30 Oct. 1765, Paul Hazelton's name appears on thatlist. By the census of 1768, there was no Paul Hazeltine/Hazelton familyin Granville or Annapolis. According to Lois Hupfer of Denver, CO., PaulHazeltine was first recorded in Townshend, VT in March 1761 where hisname was listed on the original charter for the town. In May of 1761 hewas charged to settle five rights and five men at work by 5 June. By1766 the birth of their daughter, Mary, was the first recorded child bornin Townshend, VT. The IGI places of birth for sons John, Thaddeus, Royaland Paul are undoubtedly in error. From the reocrd of the Superior Court session at Marlborough (MA) on thefifth Tuesday of Aug, 1786, we learn that on that day Mary Hazelton andTimothy Holbrook were sentenced to receive 25 stripes each. Althoughthe court record does not show their crime, Paul's next action sheds somelight on the subject. Paul Hazelton petitioned for divorce from his wifeMary, claiming that "Mary, his present wife for a considerable time hathbeen so un mindful of her duty to God and to your Petitioner her presenthusband as wholly to desart (sic) from his Bed and Board and hath latelybeen often guilty of the sin of adultry with one Timothy Holbrook."
