He settled near his father in Townsend on a farm covered with woods which he cleared away, and, being possessed of energy, thrift and unusualability, exerted much influence in the town's civil and political affairs. He served as justice of the peace, selectman, deputy sheriff and representative in the legislature for 1816-17 and 1821, filling some of the postions many years. He also ranked high as a Free Mason. In 1824 he and his brother Origin bought a farm of 300 acres just east of Winchester, N.H., where he lived the rest of his life.

Having no children Amzi formally adopted his wife's nephew Hiram son of Joseph and Sibyl (Barber) Shepherd. On Oct. 19, 1814, a bill was presented to the Governor and Council of Vt., by the house of Representatives entitled, "An act altreing the name of Hiram Shepherd to Hiram Doolittle," and the heir of Amzi.

When he was 2 years old the family moved to the pioneer settlement of Townsend, Vt., where his father had purchased a large section of unbroken woodland. In 1806 he married Clarissa Burt, a winsome Mountain lass, and, on the same mid - winter day, they made their long remembered wedding journey to the music of the old time sleigh bells, driving the 20 mile from her home in Brattleboro up the charming West river valley toTownsend. Here he had received from his father a tract of forest from the parental estate, on which he had partially chopped the timber and built and fitted up a cozy frame dwelling for his bride.

Here in Townsend Roswell and wife followed a prosperous farming career for more than 40 years, and here on the old farm their children were born and reared. By industry and frugality Roswell and Clarissa accumulated quite a handsome property for those days. They both united with the Cong. Church at Townsend. In 1849 they moved to the village of Jamaica Vt., where she died . Roswell then went to live with his son Oscar in Wardsboro, Vt., until his death.

Althoughthe court record does not show their crime, Paul's next action sheds somelight on the subject. Paul Hazelton petitioned for divorce from his wifeMary, claiming that "Mary, his present wife for a considerable time hathbeen so un mindful of her duty to God and to your Petitioner her presenthusband as wholly to desart (sic) from his Bed and Board and hath latelybeen often guilty of the sin of adultry with one Timothy Holbrook."
