Amzi Doolittle [Parents] 1 was born 2 on 16 Jun 1803 in Nelson, Madison, New York, United States. He died on 8 Oct 1878 in Appanoose, Hancock, Illinois, United States. He married 3 Phobe White on 20 Jun 1824 in Sangamon, Illinois, United States.
Other marriages:Welch, Sarah
At 18 years of age he went prospecting to Sagamon Co., Ill., with hisfather, farmed 5 years; moved to Schuyler Co., for a year. In March 1826he settled as a farmer on section 2 at Appanoose ( Littletown ) being 2ndwhite settler in Hancock Co. ( and one of the first in that part of theU. S. ), and resided there until his death, except 5 years at Burlington,a year at Muscatine and 2 years at Fort Madison, Iowa. There was not ahouse at Fort Madison then, his was the first built in 1832 atBurlington. It was burned by the soldiers that fall, but he rebuilt thenext spring. He and brother-in-law Simpson White ran the first ferry boatacross the Mississippi at Burlington also from Appanoose to Fort Madisonand Amzi sat on the first jury in Hancock Co. "Being a man of greatenterprise and energy he did much toward opening up the country andsettling it. Though eccentric in some of his ways, he was admired andloved by his many friends. His numerous deeds of charity and generositydone in a quiet way have won the undying affection of many a poor, persecutted or unfortunate man. "He was a good neighbor, a kind friendand an affectionate husband and father."
Mr Doolittle was years ago a leading business man of Burlington,Muscatine and later at Fort Madison to which places he moved for hiswife's health. He later became a large farmer and stock raiser.
In early life he was very poor and education was limited, but knowingthe value of self-acquired experience and property, he succeeded byindustry and perseverance in accumulating much wealth. He had shrewdpowers of observation, a retentive memory and delighted in recalling thetrials and triumphs of early western days. There was then no house nearerthan 20 miles. All was wilderness with no roads but Indian trails. Whenthey met the first savage, Amzi's wife began to cry, but he looked aheadto the wilderness and red men giving way to throngs of industrious whitefolks. Their first flour was brought from Dayton, Ohio. Later Amzi wentto the mill at Rushville run by horse power. Sometimes he took his gristbeyond the Ill. river to be ground. His own mill, built near his farm in1837, was the first in the Co.
Amzi was in the Winnebago and Black Hawk wars. In the former hehurried his family to a place of safety. They buried household goods inthe sand, strewed the ground above with corn and fed the hogs, thusobliterating the hiding place. Their plows were mold boards, thepitchforks were pronged sticks, and the harrows were forked stickswithwooden pins. They kept ice for use by piling up large chunks, throwing water over it, letting it freeze solid, then covering it withstraw. Amzi's house was the first in Appanoose and near where the oldhomestead stands. It was a double log-cabin with clapboard roof and doorsand puncheon floor with no locks, and the nearest neighbor 10 miles away. They had plenty to eat and plenty to wear, and he said they were thehappiest days he ever saw. When he had saved up his first $100.00, whichhe kept in a leather mitten under the floor in the cabin and pwed no onea cent, he felt he was rich indeed.
In those days game was abundant, bee trees thick through the timberand wild honey plentiful, crops were good, and there was lots of wildfruit. Besides his properties in Iowa and Ill., he owned 160 acres in Mo.in 1876. Mr Doolittle was a whig, when that party existed, and later astrong Democrat. In religion he stood on a platform of rationalism, butwas always proud of his early connection with the " old IronsideBaptists." He died at home after an illness of several months of cancerof the stomach. His funeral sermonwas from Numbers 23:10 by Rev. Kerns.

In 1762, Mr Hazelton was aresident of Uxbridge, having leased the iron works there of John Merrill, merchant of Providence, RI He gave a bond to fulfill the conditions ofthe lease signed by his sons Asa and Silas as sureties. The real estateof Asa Hazelton is described as four hundred acres of land in Upton, withtwo houses, a barn and a smiths' shop standing thereon, situated on theroad leading from Grafton to Mendon. The property of Silas Hazelton isdescribed as thirty acres known as the forge lot, one forge with threefires, three dwelling houses, one barn, one coal house, one mill, onebottling mill, one scythe mill, bounded easterly by land of Daniel March, and on road leading from the said farm to Worcester, northerly by land ofMr March, westerly by Mr Gowings' land, extending to the BlackstoneRiver, then down said river to the land of Nathaniel Gowing.

Jane Hazelton
Witness--- John Hazelton, Richard Wood"
Dr Joshua Wood brought in a claim against the estate of1496-5-10 pounds. This made trouble and Asa and Peter Hazeltonpetitioned the court that this be disallowed or cut down. Finally, theestate was declared insolvent and commissioners were appointed whoadjusted the claims against it. Mr Hazelton had been an active andenergetic business man. His business was varied, but some of his schemesfailed to be profitable and, in old age, he was financially embarrassed. When he settled in Sutton the country was new and he became a veryextensive farmer. For many years he was called in deeds and otherofficial papers, "husbandman", then he was designated "esquire" andlater, gentleman. He wrote a plain hand for that day, and often didbusiness for his townspeople as a conveyancer. Jane Hazelton died inTownshend, VT, Feb. 16 1810, aged one hundred and four years.
