The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

The Girl on the TrainThe Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

(audio version) Great use of POV.
Rachel, Anna, Megan, Tom and Scott. One is an alcoholic. One, well actually three, are cheaters. One, maybe two is abusive. One keeps secrets. One is a liar. One is a very good liar. Two are trying to regain control of their lives. Three think they are in control of their lives. They are all wrong. Four don't realize that they are in danger. Two will die. One is a killer. And these are their good traits.

The story is told from the point of view of Rachel, Anna, and Megan. And as is usually the case, people observing the same event often perceive things it differently. Some books use this POV gimmick to have each character tell their version of events. "The Girl on the Train" avoids that tedium by keeing the narrative moving forward regardless of the current point of view.

  4. By keeping the story going forward regardless of the point of view at hand, "The Girl on the Train" avoids that boredom. See: https://www.laneysauto.com/contact

  13. That’s a great review! You’ve captured the intrigue and psychological depth of The Girl on the Train well. The way you break down the characters with their flaws and secrets adds a nice layer of suspense—even in a review, it makes me want to go back and re-read the book. https://www.remarkbuilders.com/

  15. This is a great observation about "The Girl on the Train"! It perfectly captures why the multiple perspectives work so well in that novel. You're right, the book cleverly avoids the potential repetition of simply retelling the same events from different angles. Instead, each character's viewpoint adds a new layer of information, reveals their internal biases and secrets, and propels the story forward in a unique way. It keeps the reader engaged and piecing together the truth alongside the characters, rather than feeling like they're just hearing the same story retold. It's a really effective way to build suspense and create a complex, unreliable narrative.

  17. This is such a sharp and clever review—loved your breakdown of the characters with that punchy rhythm. It’s like a psychological rollercoaster checklist, and you nailed how murky and tangled their truths really are. I also appreciated your note on POV—I’m currently in the middle of designing a home insulation project with multiple homeowners involved, and it’s wild how much their perceptions of the same issue differ. Kind of reminded me of Rachel, Anna, and Megan: everyone’s version of what’s happening in the home is shaped by their own biases and blind spots. It really reinforces how valuable it is—both in fiction and in real life—to step back and consider different perspectives. Brian Morris
